Gang held Rs. 8 lakh recovered – Madurai
In a major breakthrough the Madurai City Police arrested a family of six members including a juvenile – all natives of Andhra Pradesh — and recovered Rs.eight lakh in cash 25 sovereigns of gold jewelleries and 2 two-wheelers.
Following complaints of cash and other valuables missing from commercial areas Inspector General and Commissioner of Police (Madurai City) P. Kannappan had formed special teams. The teams comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police Petchi Muthupandian Inspectors of Police Murugadason Sugumaran Malaichamy Sub-Inspector Gunasekaran among others were led by Deputy Commissioners of Police R. Thirunavukarasu and C. Rajendran.
Even as the special teams were on the lookout for the robbers a vital clue — that the accused could be operating in two groups and some women were part of them — was received. Preliminary probe gave ample scope in solving it successfully. Discreet inputs suggested that they were not Tamil-speaking people. The mobile phone data of the suspects matched with the location whenever a crime was reported. This enabled the police in getting closer to the robbers. Speaking at the Anna Nagar police station officers said that the robbers had taken two houses on rent — one at Sellur and another at Vilangudi. The gang comprised V. Sekar (49) R. Saravanakumar (30) V. Marimuthu (26) S. Lakshmi (45) S. Supriya (23) and a juvenile offender (whose name has been withheld). Though they were natives of Andhra Pradesh and had settled down in Villivakkam Chennai and had come here a year ago.
The police said that the juvenile was more used to commit the crime in lifting valuables from two-wheelers. Explaining an instance Inspector Sugumaran said that two months ago a family which had come to the sub-registrar’s office near Palanganatham found Rs. 2.80 lakh in cash kept inside the side box of their two-wheeler missing. They were wondering as to how the cash could have been taken off in a thickly located place without the lock getting damaged. They were baffled over whether the cash was brought from home or left in the almirah. A case of cash-missing was registered.
Based on the confession the police realised that the juvenile used to open the box with a pin like instrument and during that time the two women (accused) would stand near him giving ample protection. After taking out the booty the gang vanished from the spot. They would watch closely people leaving homes with valuables and those stepping out of banks and jewellery showrooms and strike at their targets when they parked their vehicles in between to have tea at some odd locations.
Deflate tubes: On some occasions the gang had deflated tubes of vehicle tyres and fled with the valuables thus making the victims immobile. Police officers have appealed to house owners to enquire about the antecedents of people seeking house on rent. “Just because some prospective tenants offered higher rents the property owners should not hand over the keys” they said.
Special rewards were given to policemen Amalanathan Rajesh and others as they were shadowing the criminals almost round-the-clock for many days the officers said.
